Question

If I am the owner of a property that is currently going through the appeal process (performed by the Assessor's office), should I pay any property taxes by the upcoming deadline?

Answer

Yes, payment of taxes prior to or on the deadline date is required in order to avoid or reduce penalties that may occur.

To make a payment you have 2 options: 1.) Pay the billed amount in full (prior to reduction from appeal) and potentially receive a refund due to a surplus from an overpayment; 2.) Contact the Treasurer's Office @ 812-435-5248 to request an estimated amount owed according to the new assessed value per the appeal. Do note that if option 2 is selected by the taxpayer, the potential for some penalties being owed can still be applicable in this situation but will be much less than if no tax were to be paid before or on the deadline date.
