Trash & Debris Enforcement Process

Process for Trash Enforcement

  • Once the Building Commission receives the complaint, the inspector will inspect the property generally within two (2) business days.
  • If the property is found to be in violation, the inspector leaves a green flag at the address and takes photos of the violation.
  • The following business day, a notice is sent to the owner of recording giving them ten (10) days to  remove the trash.
  • The inspector will re-inspect the property after the required ten (10) day notice.
  • If the property is still in violation the order will go to a contractor to remove trash from the property.
  • Once the Building Commission receives the invoice from a contractor, a bill is mailed to the owner of record.

Property Liens

If a bill for trash removal services is not paid within 30 days, a lien will be recorded against the property in the Vanderburgh County Recorder’s Office. The liens are placed on the property taxes twice a year.
