Building Commission

The Building Commission serves the residents of the City of Evansville and Vanderburgh County. Our mission is to ensure all structure and property within in Vanderburgh County is designed, built and maintained in a safe manner. 

The Building Commission ensures all Building Codes and Regulations are met during all phases of Building Construction, which includes any alteration, repair, and building on residential, commercial, and industrial projects taking place within Vanderburgh County.  All projects should begin by contacting the Area Plan Commission to check for requirements they may need prior to you requesting your Building Permit.   

To check the status of a permit or inspections, visit THIS WEBSITE and enter only the application number in the last fillable box before hitting 'search'.  When your permit details appear on the next page, hit 'Details' at the far right side of the information.  Here you can see permit details, scheduled and completed inspections. 

Contractor Licensing
License Renewals will begin on November 23rd, 2020.  
Requirements are as follows: 
- Copy of Bond
- General Liability
- Copy of CEUs or name of class and date taken
- Payment in the form of cash, check or money order
There will be a $25 late fee if all of these items are not post marked or walked in before January 31, 2021. Licenses will not be issued if any of these items are missing. 

These requirements protect the owner and all that hold an interest in the project. Bond and Insurance information is maintained within the Building Commission office via the License Clerk. Continuing Education is also approved through the License Clerk.

Floodplain Management
An important service to assist in keeping your project protected from nature. BC officials work in close partnership with the State of Indiana and the Federal Government to promote safe and preventative building practices. Contact FEMA at or to learn about flood insurance

Property Maintenance Enforcement
Administration and enforcement of the Property Maintenance Code.
Property Maintenance Enforcement regulates Existing Structures, Weeds, and Trash/Debris ordinances. Report Weeds over 9", items outside that were not designed for outdoor use, and dilapidated existing structures.

Project Management
Services are offered through the Building Commission to assist owners and/or representatives, developers, and contractors through the entire permitting process. 

Rental Registry
Registration of residential rental buildings.

EVANSVILLE, IN – The rental registry registration period has changed due to State required Cyber Security updates. The new registration period will be as follows:

Walk-in Registration will be from April 20th – May 11th
Mail-in & Online Registration will be from April 20th – May 31st
