Question

I don't want to escrow my taxes anymore. I want to make the payment myself. What is the process to make these changes?

Answer

Before you do anything else, call the company that holds your mortgage and find out if that is even an option.

Sometimes the financial entity that holds your mortgage REQUIRES that your taxes be escrowed in order to protect their investment. Escrowing your property taxes ensures the mortgage company that your home is not going to fall behind on taxes, greatly reducing the chances of the property eventually ending up on tax sale. A copy of your property tax bill is sent to both the escrow company and you, the property owner. If we are notified that your taxes are no longer being escrowed, we will honor your wishes. But please call the mortgage company first! If you have any other questions concerning escrow please call the Treasurer's office at 812-435-5248.
