Fight Blight

Fight Blight

Evansville’s Flight Blight program was announced in November of 2024.

The aim of this program is to identify and rehabilitate blighted properties in Evansville neighborhoods. This begins with $550,000 in the American Rescue Plan Act inerest, which has been allocated to fund blight removal. Some of those funds will be used in 2025 to raze a target of 150 structures - nearly three times as many as will be razed in 2024.

Many blighted properties are those that are abandoned, vacant, or beyond repair. In their current state, they are dangerous eyesores for many neighborhoods. City officials will inspect properties identified as blights and then prioritize them based on their condition or location. Properties that are in the worst condition and are clustered with other blighted properties, will be the first to be remediated. To choose which properties are inspected by the city, Mayor Terry has asked the community for help with the first phase of the program. Residents are encouraged to report properties that are vacant or are a threat to public safety. These reports can be made by emailing blight@evansville.in.gov with the property’s address, the condition or the property, and, if possible, a photo of the property.

Reports made to this email will be used to create a database from which city officials can work off. The 2025 budget allows for some properties to be purchased by the Evansville Land Bank. Once these properties are rehabilitated, they will be invested back into the community as homes for Evansville residents.

This program is designed to make residents feel safe and content in their neighborhoods. It is also a way for the city of Evansville to make sure that every property is utilized to its fullest extent.
