Who Can Use the Law Library?

The Law Library is open to the general public. Patrons include court personnel, attorneys, students from area universities and high schools, local government agencies and employees, area businesses, news media, private citizens with legal information needs, and pro se litigants. Many library users come from neighboring Indiana counties, as well as from western Kentucky and southeastern Illinois. 

For those facing evictions, collection matters, support modifications, or other matters, please stop by the DAILY IN-PERSON HELP DESK between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. Monday through Friday located in the William H. Miller Law Library (Room 207) and speak to an attorney who will help connect them to the resources to complete their matter. Participants are assisted on a first-come, first-served basis.

VLP’s weekly in-person clinics at the William H. Miller Law Library continue to meet at the following times:

      FAMILY LAW CLINIC (appointment required) on the first and third Thursday of each month
      from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

NON-FAMILY LAW CLINIC (first come, first served) on the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The regular Talk to a Lawyer program remains available at the times noted below:

First Thursday of each month from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.

Third Tuesday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. 

Low-income Indiana residents may also submit a question online to ask a lawyer for help with a civil legal matter by copying and pasting this link to open Indiana Free Legal Answers: indiana.freelegalanswers.org and clicking "get started."

About the Law Library

The William H. Miller Law Library is the only major legal research facility in southwestern Indiana.

Evansville has had a law library since the early 1900’s. Maintained for many years by the Evansville Bar Association, the Law Library was operated by the Vanderburgh County Commissioners during the 1970's, and became a part of the Vanderburgh Circuit Court system in the early 1980's. Current funding comes from Vanderburgh County with additional support provided by the Evansville Bar Association and the Vanderburgh Law Library Foundation, a non-profit organization established in 1982. The Law Library was renamed in 1990 to honor then-retiring Circuit Judge William H. Miller.

The collection includes approximately 18,000 volumes and is non-circulating. There are 6,000 volumes on microfiche. Some electronic resources are also available. Holdings include case law from the National Reporter System, federal statutes, and an extensive Indiana collection.

The Law Library occupies 1,700 square feet of space in the Civic Center Complex, in close proximity to the courts and other county offices. There is seating for approximately 12 patrons, in addition to a conference room seating up to 8 persons.
