Traffic Court Tickets

The Traffic Division of the Vanderburgh County Clerk's Office is responsible for receipting in the payments for the Traffic Violations Bureau (TVB).  Failure to pay or appear on your court date will result in the suspension of your driver's license and/or issuance of a warrant for your arrest.

A few programs to be aware of before your court appearance are as follows:

Alive at 25

Persons under the age of 25 (ages 16-24) charged with their first moving violation must participate in the Alive at 25 program offered at Ivy Tech. Defendants simply attend court on the scheduled day (which can be found on the ticket), and after being seen by the Judge and ordered to complete Alive at 25, must enroll and complete the program within 60 days. They will then bring the completed certificate to the Misdemeanor Probation Department (room 201) where the case will be dismissed.  This program is required and may only be completed once.

Defensive Driving

If you are interested in completing a defensive driving course to offset points on your license resulting from moving violations, you have the option to attend court on your scheduled day and request permission to do so. If granted, more information will be provided to you at your court appearance.

Infraction Deferral Program:

Please refer to the Prosecutor's web site or call them at (812) 435-5980 to see if you qualify.

Going to Court

The Traffic Violations Bureau assigns an initial hearing date known as the infraction hearing. This hearing date is printed on your ticket. At the infraction hearing you may admit the violation or deny the violation. If you admit the violation, you will be asked to choose one of the following:
Admission: You may admit the violation and pay the ticket. An admission has the same effect as a court judgment. A record of this judgment will be sent to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles of Indiana and your licensing state.
No Contest: You may choose to pay the ticket without admitting guilt. A plea of no contest has the same effect as a court judgment. A record of this judgment will be sent to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles of Indiana and your licensing state.

If you choose to deny the violation, you may deny the ticket and request a court trial in front of a judge. You will be required to appear on the trial date which may not be changed by telephone.

Payment Options

Submitting payment for a ticket prior to your court appearance is an admission of the violation(s), or a pleading of nolo contendere, and will have the same effect as a court judgment. By paying in advance, your court appearance is canceled and you wave your right to a trial. Some infractions require a court appearance and are not payable before court. For a list of common tickets and their price before court, please see the bottom of this page.
