Marriage Information
A Marriage License may be issued by our office to couples if:
- One party is a resident of Vanderburgh County, and plans to be married in the state of Indiana; or
- If neither applicant is an Indiana resident and the couple will be married in Vanderburgh County.
To Apply for a Marriage License:
- Begin the application online either at home or in our office by visiting: http://courts.in.gov/marriage
- You will need to know basic biographical information for both applicants, as well as the following when applying online:
- Date and reason previous marriage ended
- Highest level of education completed
- Names and birth dates of dependent children under 21 years of age
- Parental information (if known) including name, mother’s maiden name, state of birth, and current residence
- To finish the marriage application and to receive your license to get married, you must visit our office located in the Civic Center Complex City/ County Admin Building, 1 NW Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Room S240, in Evansville, Indiana.
- Both applicants must apply together, in person between 7:30 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Bring with you one of the following:
- A valid, state-issued ID or Driver’s License with current address
- A certified Birth Certificate (not the hospital keepsake)
- Valid Passport
- Military ID
- You will leave our office with two forms: the official license and a keepsake copy. Take both forms to your ceremony to be signed by you, your witnesses, and the Officiate at your wedding within 60 days. If you do not get married within 60 days, your license will be void and you will need to reapply.
Fees:
- $25.00, if at least one applicant is a resident of Vanderburgh County; or
- $65.00, if both applicants are out of state residents and wish to be married in Vanderburgh County.
- Effective July 1, 2021, the fees increased to $25 and $65, respectively.
Our office accepts cash, cashier’s checks, money orders (no personal checks) and credit cards.
Please be advised that credit cards will be charged a $1.50 convenience fee.
Who May Perform a Wedding:
According to IC 31-11-6-1, marriages may be solemnized by any of the following:
(1) A member of the clergy of a religious organization (even if the cleric does not perform religious functions for an individual congregation), such as a minister of the gospel, a priest, a bishop, an archbishop, or a rabbi.
(2) A judge.
(3) A mayor, within the mayor's county.
(4) A clerk or a clerk-treasurer of a city or town, within a county in which the city or town is located.
(5) A clerk of the circuit court.
(6) The governor.
(7) The lieutenant governor.
(8) A member of the general assembly.
(9) The Friends Church, in accordance with the rules of the Friends Church.
(10) The German Baptists, in accordance with the rules of their society.
(11) The Bahai faith, in accordance with the rules of the Bahai faith.
(12) The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in accordance with the rules of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
(13) An imam of a masjid (mosque), in accordance with the rules of the religion of Islam.
After the Ceremony:
The signed license must be returned to our office to be recorded, either by mail or hand delivery.
You may call our office at (812) 435-5188 Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. to verify we have received and recorded your marriage. When you call, you may request certified copies (legal proof of marriage) to be prepared for pickup at your convenience. Once we receive the signed license, the certified copies will be available and may be picked up in our office.
Courthouse Ceremonies:
Ceremonies may be performed in the Clerk’s Office, Room S240 of the Courthouse by appointment only.
If you wish to be married in our office, please call (812) 435-5719 and plan to arrive 15-30 minutes prior to the appointment to complete the application. Please advise our office of the number of people expected to attend the ceremony. Donations are accepted, but not expected.
REQUESTING A COPY OF A MARRIAGE RECORD
The Vanderburgh County Clerk's Office is responsible for Vanderburgh County Marriage Records from 1835 to the present year, and we can also provide copies of marriage applications from the original books, which may be useful for genealogical purposes.
Regular copies are $1.00 each. Certified copies are $4.00 each.
You may also contact the Vanderburgh County Clerk's Office to obtain certified copies of a Marriage License, the legal document needed to provide proof of marriage.
If you would like order online certified copy of your Marriage License:
You can now use our new Official Records Online system to request a marriage license or divorce decree. You will be directed to their safe and secure website to complete the document purchase.
If you would like to pick up a certified copy of your Marriage License in person:
You may first call our office at (812) 435-5188 to place your request. We will immediately prepare your request so it is available for pick-up in our office at your convenience. Certified copies are $4.00 each and are always available to the public at the Marriage License desk in Room S240 Civic Center Complex City/ County Admin Building, 1 NW Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Evansville, Indiana.
If you prefer certified copies mailed to you, please submit to our office the following:
- Your written request, including each party’s first and last name at the time of the marriage, year the marriage took place (approximate, if not known), and the number of copies you would like;
- Payment in full (cash, cashier’s check, or money order; NO personal checks); and
- A self-addressed, stamped envelope in which we will send you the requested documents
