Article I - Definitions

A. Burial space: Any space within the Cemetery used or intended to be sued for the interment of human remains and includes crypts, niches, and earthen interments.

B. Burial space owner: Any person in whose name a burial space is of record as owner in the office of the Cemetery.

C. Cemetery: All land and structures comprising Oak Hill Cemetery and Locust Hill Cemetery.

D. Cemetery Purposes: Any and all things requisite or necessary for or incident or convenient to the establishment, maintenance, management, operation, improvement, and conduct of a Cemetery, the preparation for interment and the interment of the human dead, and the care, preservation, and embellishment of Cemetery property.

E. Columbarium: A structure, room or space in a building or structure used or intended to be used for the interment of cremated human remains.

F. Community Mausoleum or columbarium: A Mausoleum or columbarium in which interment rights are, or have been offered for sale to the general public.

G. Cremation: The incineration of the body of a deceased person.

H. Crematory: A building or structure, within which the remains of deceased persons are, or are intended to be cremated.

I. Crypt: A chamber in a Mausoleum of sufficient size to entomb the uncremated remains of a deceased person.

J. Human Remains: The body of a deceased person, and includes the body in any stage of decomposition and cremated remains.

K. Interment: Any lawful disposition of the remains of a deceased person.

L. Lot: Four (4) or more burial spaces in a consecutive row.

M. Mausoleum: A structure or building used, or intended to be used for the interment of human remains in crypts, vaults or niches, including a columbarium.

N. Niche: A space in a columbarium, used or intended to be used, for the interment of the cremated remains of one or more deceased persons.

O. Superintendent: The person appointed by the Mayor for the purpose of managing the Cemetery.

P. Board of Public Works, City of Evansville: Persons duly appointed by the Mayor, and qualified pursuant to law, to serve as the governing body of the Cemetery. (Referred to as “Board” in the remainder of this document).
