Evansville Fire Department Applicant Requirements
Applications to test for our eligibility list are accepted every two years on the odd year (i.e. 2025, 2027). At the completion of the testing process, applicants are ranked from highest to lowest and this applicant eligibilty list will be in effect for two years. (i.e. 2026 - 2027 and 2028-2029). We then offer employment from the applicant eligibilty list as vacancies on the fire department occur.
NOTE: IC 36-8-4-2 Residence requirements (06-2021) Allows employed firefighters to live outside of the state.
Requirements:
- U.S. Citizen
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 21 to 40 years of age (Must be 21 when the eligibility goes into effect on January 1, 2026
- Eligibity ends on applicants 40th* birthday *recently changed July 2023
- Valid driver license
- Not been convicted of a felony that has not been expunged or sealed.
- Any display of offensive, inappropriate or unprofessional body art is prohibited. Those items that could be considered offensive, inappropriate, or unprofessional are outlined in EFD Policy 222.4
- Discharge from military not categorized as “Other Than Honorable”, “Bad Conduct” or “Dishonorable”. (if applicable)
- Comply with all statutory requirements.
- Qualified to perfom the essential job functions specified in the Firefighter Job Description (see link below)
- Meet any requirements established by the Merit Commission for appointment to the Department.
The examination process shall consist of the following components:
- A written test or tests (will be administered June 14, 2025)
- Oral interview
- CPAT - Candidate Physical Ability Test developed and licensed by IAFF
- 75' Aerial Ladder Climb (Testing for the fear of heights - acrophobia)
Such relevant assessment methods as may be adopted by the Fire Merit Commission that are consistent with professional standards and legal guidelines.

- 1st Year Probationary Firefighter Salary $64,434, 2nd year Firefighter $67,434, 5th year Firefighter $72,178
