Evansville Fire Department Applicant Requirements

Applications to test for our eligibility list are accepted every two years on the odd year (i.e., 2023, 2025). At the completion of the testing process, applicants are ranked from highest to lowest and this applicant list would be in effect for two years. (2024 - 2025) As vacancies occur, we offer jobs from the list.

NOTE: (IC 36-8-4-2 Residence requirements (06-2021) Allows employed firefighters to live outside of the state.

Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizen
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 21 to 40 years of age (Must be 21 when the eligibility goes into effect on January 1 or employed by EFD before 40th* birthday) *recently changed July 2023
  • Valid driver license
  • Have never been convicted of a felony.
  • Good moral character
  • Not display any offensive, inappropriate, or unprofessional tattoos or body art, including, split or forked tongue. Those items that could be considered offensive, inappropriate, or unprofessional are outlined in EFD Policy 100.012
  • Discharge from military not categorized as “Other Than Honorable”, “Bad Conduct” or “Dishonorable”. (if applicable)
  • Comply with all statutory requirements.
  • Meet any requirements established by the Merit Commission for appointment to the Department.

The examination process shall consist of the following components:

  1. A written test or tests.
  2. Oral interview
  3. CPAT - Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT Cards are not accepted)
  4.  75' Ladder Climb after eligibility list is certified and after an offer for employment is accepted by the applicant. (Testing for the fear of heights - acrophobia) 

Such relevant assessment methods as may be adopted by the Fire Merit Commission that are consistent with professional standards and legal guidelines.
