Election Office          

The Vanderburgh County Election Board is made up from one political appointment from each party chairperson, the County Clerk, and an attorney. Members of the Vanderburgh County Election Board are:

• Joseph H. Harrison Jr., Election Board President
• David Shaw, Election Board Member
• Carla J. Hayden, Secretary
• Doug Briody, Election Board Attorney

All Election Board meetings are open to the public. The date, time and place of the meetings are announced at least 48 hours in advance.

ABSENTEE VOTING

Absentee voting generally starts 30 days prior to the election.  The election office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm during the election period. Saturday voting will be the two Saturdays prior to Election Day from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm

Absentee voting by mail is available for anyone meeting one of the following requirements:

• Absent from the county on Election Day (College student, military personnel, or will be out of town).
• Confined person or caring for a confined person.
• Have disabilities.
• At least 65 years of age.
• Official election duties away from your polling place.
• Scheduled to work the entire 12 hours at your regular employment.
• Observance of a religious discipline or holiday
• Eligible to vote under the "fail-safe" procedures in IC 3-10-11 or 3-10-12
• Military or a Public Safety Officer
• Serious Sex Offender
• Unavailability of Transportation to the polls.

FILING REQUIREMENTS FOR CANDIDATES

A candidate for nomination at the Primary election for Vanderburgh County offices must file a declaration of candidacy in the office of Vanderburgh County Election Office located in Room 216 in the Civic Center Administration Building.

The state approved declaration of candidacy form is available from the Vanderburgh County Election Board. A candidate wishing to declare their candidacy should call the Election Office at 435-5122 to arrange the declaration. You will need to bring your voter's registration card to be filed with the declaration.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS FOR CANDIDATES

A person must be a registered voter in the election district to be represented.

A person is disqualified from holding or being a candidate for an elected office if the person has
a) Entered a plea of guilty to a felony
b) Been convicted of a felony
