A healthier environment leads to a healthier you!

It’s not only the things you do on Earth Day, but
the Earth Day things you do all year through that truly matter.

At the Vanderburgh County Health Department we LIVE EVERY DAY LIKE IT'S EARTH DAY, and here's how you can too:

REDUCE and prevent waste by consuming less and by making green purchase decisions.  For instance consider a solid ink copier to avoid toner cartridge waste.  If you do use toner and ink cartridges, when they are empty, send them in for recycling.

Think before you print out documents.  Do you really need a paper copy?  Ask your e-mail contacts to do so as well by including the statement:  "P Think Green!  Please consider the environment!  Print this e-mail only if it is necessary."

REUSE office supplies such as folders and paper.  If one side of a page is clean print on the second side, or use it for jotting down memos.

Wesselman Woods recyclesRECYCLE waste such as paper, phonebooks, magazines, cans and plastic containers.   Either leave recyclables at the curb for pick-up, or drop them off at a nearby recycling center.  Many charitable organizations collect aluminum cans to help fund their programs.

VC Solid Waste DistrictGet involved with organizations who practice and promote the importance of reducing the amount and toxicity of waste thrown away.  Reuse containers and products, recycle as much as possible, and buy products with recycled content.

There are many more ways to a healthier environment in addition to the three R's (reduce, reuse, recycle):

take the stairsCONSERVE ENERGY by turning off the lights, computers and appliances when they are unneeded.  Turn down the thermostat in the winter, and up in the summer.  Take the stairs instead of the elevator (which is also good for your health).

CONSERVE WATER and never dump contaminants
on the land, into the sewer, or into to lakes and streams.

mosquito
Chose low or non-toxic greener options for pest control
Promote Integrated Pest Management practices at your home school or office.

It's simple to do your share to clear the air.

VOLUNTEER and use some of your spare time to make our environment a better place!
